31 great photos as Edinburgh street is transformed into Victorian London for filming of The Buccaneers

A period drama has transformed an Edinburgh street into a bustling corner of 1870s London as filming for The Buccaneers continues.

Crews for the Apple TV series setup in the New Town earlier in the week, with filming in the capital set to finish tonight. Whilst on location, road closures were put in place along St Vincent Street, St Stephen Street, Circus Lane, Cumberland Street and North East Circus Place.

On Thursday, crews could be seen filming a sequence at St Stephen’s Church, with eagle eyed visitors noticing a few added changes to the landmark building, including different signage and decorative torchiers.

The historic part of Edinburgh provides the perfect backdrop for the series, with cobbled streets and old buildings making for a suitable location for period films and TV series. In addition, sand was also spread across the roads, with crews also having erected fake lampposts and street signs for the production.

The rare spectacle drew crowds of locals and tourists who stopped to watch actors in period dress as majestic horses passed through in the area. Spectators were also able to catch a glimpse of the set which included a fruit and veg stall and newspaper stand.

The Buccaneers is a period drama set in the Regency-era 1870s and follows a group of young daughters of American nouveau riche families who travel to London in hopes of integrating into English high society.

The series stars Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, Matthew Broome, Josh Dylan and Christina Hendricks.

Ahead of the shoot, local residents received letters about the filming, which advised them road closures would be in place for “Season 3 of the period drama Debutante” - the working title for the Apple TV series The Buccaneers.

The letter added: “Our filming will include both interior and exterior scenes, recreating an 1800s period street with period dressing and characters arriving by horse and carriage.”
