Travel: A perfect retreat

There are few better places to enjoy the Scottish summer than Dumfries and Galloway’s Craigadam Country House Hotel.Located just off the A75 about 15 minutes’ drive from Dumfries, Craigadam is close to Castle Douglas, the “Food Town” with its independent shops and cafés.
This grand country home and converted farm steadings is approached along a half-mile driveway which offers a taster of the 700 acres in which it is set. It’s a stunning location – quiet and relaxing, yet ideally placed to explore the surrounding area.
Host Celia Pickup offers 10 unique rooms, all of which can be accessed from outside with no need to enter the hotel. Craigadam can lend itself to all occasions with its panelled dining room and large enclosed courtyard where you can enjoy a coffee after breakfast or a drink before dinner.
Craigadam’s fine dining has seen it awarded a MacAllan Taste of Scotland Award. The hotel’s grounds are also home to a farm which produces organic lamb, and Celia’s cooking and presentation of local ingredients has won admirers far and wide.
The dining room is open to non-residents but advance booking is essential.
