Great Fife days out by train: Two new stations bring the seaside to your doorstep

With two new train stations, there’s never been a better time to explore the Kingdom of Fife.

Looking to discover hidden gems, old favourites or holiday days out this summer? Go by train and discover the delights of Fife, with new stations at Leven and Cameron Bridge, which opened this June.

Leven became a firm favourite with the Victorians when its first train station was unveiled in 1854. This new investment means a return to regular services for local people and visitors alike and increased capacity in the region. Each new station has cycle storage available and will be served by ScotRail trains which have designated space for four bikes, making them the all-rounders for days out.

Family friendly adventure awaits

Of course, any trip on a train is a treat for little ones, and ScotRail’s Kids for a Quid tickets make for an affordable day out. Up to four children can travel across Scotland for just £1 return each with every paying adult. These tickets are only available from ticket offices or on the train, so speak to a member of ScotRail staff who’ll be happy to help.

Easily accessible from Edinburgh and Dundee, Leven is the perfect bucket-and-spade seaside destination – it rates highly on Tripadvisor and Google reviews for its wide clean beach (just a few minutes walk from the new station), lovely views and, of course, the chance for a dip in the water. If the weather isn’t kind, you can still pack your cossie and go for a swim at the pool here. Watch out for the crocodile!

Just a few minutes from the town is the lovely Letham Glen; walk in under the arch – listed for its historic significance – and explore beautiful woodland trails, with a lovely stream running through it, the sunken garden (which used to be a swimming pool) and kids play area.

Less than half an hour’s walk from station – up past the coastal caravan park and golf course – is Silverburn Park, with its 27 glorious acres of lush woodland and floral displays, and regular activities. If your kids are transport daft, keep an eye out for Fife Heritage Railway’s regular events held within the park.

Fife is, of course, the home of golf, but there’s more than the OId Course to explore. Pack your clubs and visit the challenging Leven Links Course, which is listed in Scotland’s Top 100 – not least of all because Old Tom Morris (the father of golf) had a hand in shaping the course.

Eat, drink and be merry

Fife is also a key fishing area with plenty of freshly caught produce on offer. Dining-in options include plenty of cafes – with delicious cakes – bars and restaurants, while fish and chips are synonymous with the seaside and there are plenty of four and five star rated choices to choose from.

Foodie heaven lies in the likes of the Blacketyside Farm Shop, packed with locally grown produce and gifts. Visit for the day, leave with happy memories and bags bulging with authentically dirty carrots and berries!

The new station at Cameron Bridge has 125 car parking spaces, helping locals make their Fife and Edinburgh commute by train. Plus new paths connect the station to the Methilhill area, Cameronbridge Distillery, and Cameron Hospital.

More to explore

Grab your walking boots and discover the Fife Coastal Path, as it stretches 183 km along from Kincardine to Newburgh. The easily accessible sections from Leven Station could take you up to picturesque Lundin Links and Lower Largo. Here Alexander Selkirk (the man who dreamed up Robinson Crusoe) spent his childhood.

While the new stations offer plenty of options for a visit to the seaside, the rail route offers plenty to enjoy for locals looking to explore somewhere new. How about Deep Sea World at North Queensferry? Show your Kids for a Quid ScotRail ticket and your wee one visits free. Or how about a trip back in time to Scotland’s newest city, Dunfermline, where history and heritage go hand-in-hand with lush green spaces and a vibrant shopping centre. The ScotRail Inspiration Hub has loads of ideas for days out and things to do, all within walking distance of the nearest station.
