Run don’t walk to this new pop-up

It’s hard to overstate how popular Glasgow facial salon 33 Dowanhill is.

Put it this way, whenever the owner, Joanna Laxton, opens her appointment book, the slots sell out faster than you can say ‘smooth my wrinkles, please’.

I’ve been to the nine-year-old destination once, and it was a brilliant experience.

And, now, she’s bringing her expertise along the M8 to Edinburgh.

She’ll be available two days per month, with a residency at Stockbridge salon and shop, The Method.

I headed along to try one of her inaugural slots, for a 60-minute signature facial (there are also 80 minute facials available).

They take place down in the cosy basement-level white-painted treatment room, with its flickering candles and soundtrack of neo-soul - Katie Tupper’s She Said was one of the songs playing.

I could already feel my frown lines relaxing, as I slipped under the thick duvet on the heated bed. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else on a freezing February day.

Then Joanna set to work. She’s trained in London and Paris, and uses a range of techniques, as well as different skincare brands. This time, there was a line up of potions from the likes of Dr Barbara Sturm, as well as The Method’s own natural line, MODM.

First of all, my grubby skin gets a double cleanse, with a rich balm, then some oil that contains rosehip, blueberry and evening primrose.

It’s massaged, with Joanna following the topography of my face, as if she’s re-sculpting it - yes, please. She works around the orbitals of my eyes, smooths my forehead outward, and uses lifting moves along my cheekbones.

When I visited the Glasgow salon, the massage was much firmer. This time, it’s gentler, and more of a relaxing experience.

There’s a spritz of toner, then a mask is painted on with a brush that’s as small and soft as a chinchilla’s paw. While this works, my decolette and neck area are massaged, with all the built-up tension from working al-desko being ironed out. It’s blissful.

Joanna utilises other tools. There’s an acupressure wand, which is gently pressed against muscles to relax them, and some ice cold cryo balls are smoothed across my skin.

The final step is another layer of moisture, and a dab of orange-scented lip balm.

I’ve been neglecting my face recently. I’ve got lazy. Thus, this felt like a much needed boost and my skin looked plump and radiant afterwards, as if it’d just undergone a passive yet very invigorating yoga session.

As I’d complained about it looking grey and wan, Laxton recommended that I invest in some of her favourite vitamin C serum - Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, and I was grateful for the tip, since she knows her onions.

I expect the appointments at her Edinburgh residency to sell out as fast as Glasgow does.

Fingers on the buzzers.

A 60-minute Signature Facial is £120 (or £155 for 80 minutes) with Joanna Laxton of 33 Dowanhill at The Method, 9 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh, www.33dowanhill.com
