Snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and newts - not everybody's idea of fun companions, but fascinating creatures nonetheless.
More associated with tropical climes than Scotlands chillier climate, there are still a fair number of these animals to spot.
From common garden visitors to beasties only found on a single Scottish island, these are the 10 breeds of reptile and amphibian you can find in Scotland.

9. Common Lizard
Found all over Scotland, although scarce in the central lowlands and absent from the Northern Isles, the common lizard loves to bask in the sun but will quickly take cover in the undergrowth if disturbed. They have a clever trick to evade predators - being able to shed their tail if trapped, quickly growing another one in its place. | Canva/Getty Images

10. Sand Lizard
Although not a native Scottish species, there is a large colony of rare sand lizards on the Isle of Coll. Scientists released some of the lizards onto the island back in the 1970s and they have thrived in the island's sand dunes. | Canva/Getty Images
