From proud standard poodles to tiny toys, this is a type of dog which is known the world over.
They are often portrayed in films and television as high maintenance, snooty, and, frankly, divas – perhaps due to their immaculate coats and specific grooming standards seen in the show ring.
But poodles of all shapes and sizes are intelligent, active, and loving dogs which make the perfect pets. Here are 10 facts you may not know about the poodle.

9. Poodles have been sled dogs
Poodles once raced the famous Iditarod sled race in Alaska. A man named John Suter noticed his pet trying to outrun his snowmobile, and an idea formed. Unlike huskies which would keep running, he said poodles would notice if you fell from your sled and come and get you. Photo: Getty Images

10. Poodles are hypoallergenic
Poodles are hypoallergenic and do not shed. However, they require brushing every day or their coat will tangle into matts which are uncomfortable and sometimes painful for the dog. Poodles need to be groomed by a professional around every six weeks to keep them healthy and happy. Photo: Getty Images
