If your current home is lacking in magic and romance, then we suggest a move to this property in East Linton.
The Garden Wing has both of these attributes in spades. It has just come on the market for offers over £590,000, via estate agent Coulters, and is one of the seven apartments that are situated in the Georgian A-listed Old Mansion House at Newbyth.
This two storey Gothic-style sandstone crenelated home, designed by Archibald Elliot, who worked on buildings including Stobo Castle and Blair Castle, was built in 1817 for general Sir David Baird, who retired here after his military career.
The new owner will be able to enjoy the rich history of the building and the countryside outlook, as well as the use of a sweeping crunchy gravel driveway, to make them feel like landed gentry. The 198-square-metre flat itself has its own front door, which leads into the hallway, then turn right into the grandest room of all - an amazing bow-ended sitting room with cupola, where you’ll find French doors that lead out to the private curving sheltered terrace, with its views to the vast shared gardens.
Among other spaces, there are also three double bedrooms, one of which has a Jack and Jill en-suite bathroom, plus dining area, kitchen, study, utility room, two garages and an intriguing tower room so you can spot any enemies from miles away.
We spoke to the current owner about the impressive property.
Why was it time to sell?
We do so with great reluctance, due only to changing logistical requirements. If not for those, I am sure we would have stayed a lifetime and we already know that we will miss it forever.
How long have you been there and have you done any major jobs to the property while there?
We have been here for 14 glorious years. During this time we have had the kitchen completely remodelled, the log burner installed, and done substantial redecorating.
What's it like living in such a historic building? Did you fall for it as soon as you saw it?
I feel incredibly privileged to have been the guardian of such a unique historical and beautiful building for the past 14 years. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I vividly remember peering into the living room window and wishing I could live there. A year later, it was on the market and the rest is history.
What would that part of the house have been used for originally?
My property is in the Garden Wing, which was originally the children’s wing and billiards room.
Your interior decor is lovely, did you have someone to help with that or are they all your own ideas?
No, I have to take full responsibility for the interior decor which combines items from a former flat in Clapham, some great finds from salvage and some special pieces found along the way. I enjoy mixing up styles and eclectic looks - I am forever moving things around.
Why did you choose the colour scheme of blues and greens?
This has been my sanctuary, and the colours reflect how deeply peaceful it is. The colours felt sympathetic to the nature surrounding us in East Lothian.
Where did you find your artworks?
Some I own, and some are on long-term loan from my very dear friend David Brown, who is ex Glasgow School of Art and is the former owner of the fabulous La Potiniere restaurant in nearby Gullane. He enjoys seeing them displayed and I love caring for them.
What have been your happiest times in the property?
There have been some absolutely cracking parties, but some of my favourite moments have been sitting by the fireplace playing or listening to music. It is so peaceful, but also lends itself to some brilliant sociability. What a setting!
What are your favourite spaces?
Sitting on the sofa on the private south facing terrace has always brought tremendous joy. Other favourite spots are by the fire, relaxing in that lovely bath with the cupola above, and wandering outside in many of the wonderful enclaves in the garden.
Tell us about the outside space and the terrace
The Garden Wing is set in 5.5 acres of grounds encompassing wide open lawns, some phenomenal redwood trees and woods with cedars and other delights, as well as a greenhouse with vegetable patch. The private terrace becomes an extra room in spring and summer, when most breakfasts and lunches take place out there. We’ve had a lot of ballgames and water fights out on those lawns too. We even painted a pickleball court in the garage courtyard and this has added yet another brilliant aspect to living here. We have become highly competitive!
What's it like living near East Linton - any top tips for things to do in the area?
Fabulous, it is the best village in East Lothian in my opinion. There are wonderful people, as well as great walks, good rail and bus links, and fantastic amenities including local pubs, bakery, independent bookshop, butcher, post office and farm shop, amongst other things. There are also so many stunning beaches nearby, golf courses and the Lammermuir hills for walking or cycling. Plus, it is such an easy train ride into town.
