I've found the best five vegetarian restaurants in Scotland

Here’s our round-up of veggie delights
Sylvan
There’s nothing we don’t adore about this vegetarian and vegan Glasgow restaurant, from the small plates to the dynamic wines, zippy cocktails and serene space. They really make dishes sing, and you’ll never have had carrots like the ones with harissa and mint, or a dessert that features chocolate, pear and mezcal. Your five-a-day has never been so exciting.

Hendersons
This vegetarian restaurant’s roots go way back to 1962 and its first venue, down in an Edinburgh’s Henderson Street basement, where you could always get a sturdy slab of vegetarian lasagne. Its Edinburgh Barclay Place replacement has been open since 2021, and serves smarter dishes than the brand’s earlier incarnation. You can even get a Sunday roast, which features seitan rather than the traditional beef. Now, there’s also a two-month-old Hendersons in Glasgow, at 721 Pollokshaws Road.

Cambo Gardens Cafe
This is such a gorgeous spot, in Cambo House’s former stable block, and it serves wholesome vegetarian and vegan food, no meat. The head chef is author Gillian Veal, who used to own Dundee’s The Parlour Cafe and has written books including Cafe Cooking. Basically, she knows her way around a vegetable, especially if it’s one that was grown in their walled garden. Expect excellent soup, cheese scones, and sandwiches.
Planet G
We love the team at Planet G, who serve vegan food and were joint winners of the Scottish Street Food Awards in 2024, before taking away the Spice Award at the British Street Food Awards the same year. They’re Edinburgh based, and regularly pop up at Leith and Stockbridge Market, but you’ll also find them in other destinations. Their co-owner Gemma Costa may also be familiar, as she reached the final 12 in Masterchef: The Professionals this year. Look out for their plant-based tiramisu.
Five Acres
We’ve been poring over this Fife seed- to-plate canteen’s social media, as they can make a vegetarian dish look very temptingly bonnie. They showcase seasonal bounty grown at the East Neuk Market Garden, with dishes including beetroot antipasto with tofu and cashews; roasted potatoes and courgettes with garlic, rosemary and Parmesan, or smokey aubergine and butterbean stew with yoghurt and coriander. They also do a mean toastie.
