I had the decadent £60 menu at this handsome Edinburgh hotel restaurant

This special menu is available until mid-November

I’m always a bit jealous of those who’ve got a group of buddies they’ve had since school or uni.

My girl gang is only in my imagination. The pals I do have are all very wonderfully unique, and don’t really blend.

Anyway, even if I tried, they’re all so busy that it’d be worse than herding cats. I’d say it's more similar to wrestling an angry pine marten into a pair of tights.

So, it would’ve been difficult for me to properly do the Entre Filles - ‘among girls’ - menu that’s currently available at our branch of upmarket steak restaurant chain, Le Petit Beefbar, which is inside the five-star hotel InterContinental Edinburgh The George. It’s designed for groups of four or more women, and is available until November 12.

However, because I do not have three girls to ask, I took my husband - aka my lovely lady-in-waiting and BFF for one day only - and we tried an adapted-for-two-people version of this experience. And, I am very happy to report that it isn’t a gender stereotyped food list, with pink things, hummus and the salads they think we love. Quite the opposite. It is a blubbery blow out of a feast that begins with a restorative glass of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial each. I don’t mind if I do.

Then, we move onto the starters, which are designed for sharing. Okay, so there IS one salad in the form of three crisp Romaine leaves that are topped by a Caesar anchovy sauce, a grating of Parmesan and mayo, but it’s not a healthy and boring one, so we’re okay. This tangy amuse bouche is followed by the croque sando. Yep, the Japanese influence in this restaurant is strong.

There are four perfectly right-angled and squishy shokupan squares that are filled with a rich and iron-y 45-day cured beef striploin prosciutto and mozzarella. These sannies are propped like playing cards to form a little square construction, with Beefbar’s signature spinach and herb sauce poured in the middle for dipping. We also have a portion of their ridiculously titled ‘Insane Rock Corn’, which sounds like a nu metal concert, but is a huge bowlful of sweetcorn clumps that are covered in an incredibly addictive tempura batter and a drizzle of sriracha mayo.

Once you pop, you really can’t stop.

Then, one moves onto the steak frites section of the menu. We try smaller versions of the three items that usually arrive for four to share. So, there’s a rich slab of Italian seasoning coated NY strip, and a beautifully buttery and tender fillet steak, both cut into bite-sized morsels. The lemon chicken robata consists of sliced breast meat that has a soft texture as if it’s been cooked in the sous vide, before being barbecued.

There are trimmings, too. Two types of skinny fries, one of which is covered in a Parmesan and grated autumn truffle flurry, and the other virginal.

Also, a really heady and stocky peppercorn sauce and more of that signature spinachy one that’s like something Popeye would request at a black tie do.

Pudding is included in the deal, so don’t be a quitter. There’s a very fancy sounding Gelato Mantecanto Al Minuto, which translates as a large churned-just-before-serving blob of fior di latte gelato, and a bunch of excellent toppings in what look like stone shot glasses. Inside those receptacles, we discover caramelised almonds, chopped strawberries and blueberries, chocolate sauce, toffee sauce, raspberry sauce, tiny bits of tablet, and meringue shards.

We find our perfect combo - ice-cream, toffee sauce and an almond, and find it difficult to deviate from perfection. I inhale the tablet neat.

There is a second dessert that consists of cubes of sugar-and-cinnamon-dusted French toast. They taste as good as they look, unlike churros, which always make me feel sad and empty, and they come with a ramekin of pale yellow praline sauce and another of vanilla-flecked mascarpone.

It feels like we’ve had a very spoiling and decadent old time. I also feel like this menu is a pretty good deal, considering just the glass of Champagne would be £19 on its own and a New York strip is £75.

“How’s the gout coming on?” I ask my other half, as he guzzles our remains happily.

“Deliciously,” he says, before offering me the last of the French toast cubes.

Ach, he’s such a lovely lass.
