According to the Scottish Environmental Horticulture Growth Strategy there are over one million people in Scotland who are regular gardeners.
From communal tenement gardens to expansive private grounds, we love our borders, rockeries, lawns and patios.
It’s hugely satisfying to see a plant you’ve cared for bloom into beautiful flowers, but you need to be careful what you choose and where you place it.
Some gardens have areas that rarely get any shade, which can be an issue for those plants that need time away from direct sunlight.
Luckily there are many plants with colourful flowers that just love the sun, but still thrive in the notoriously unpredictable Scottish climate.
Here are 11 of our favourites.

5. Cranesbill
The pretty Cranesbill is one of the longest-flowering and hardiest geraniums - capable of blossoming in even the most variable of Scottish summers. These wonderful and sun-loving plants will provide you with flowers all the way from late spring to the middle of autumn - real value for money. | Canva/Getty Images

6. Black-eyed Susan
The evocative and descriptively-named Black-eyed Susan produces bright golden petals surrounding dark central 'eyes' in late summer. Native to North America, it's a close relative of the sunflower. A word of caution though - it's toxic to cats. | Canva/Getty Images

7. Stonecrop
There are numerous types of Stonecrop, or Sedum, but the ‘Autumn Joy’ variety is one of the best for well-drained and sunny Scottish borders. Its clusters of pink flowers are long-lasting, deepening to a lovely coppery colour in autumn. | Canva/Getty Images

8. Catmint
Provifing aromatic foliage and long-lasting blue-purple flowers from spring right the way through to autumn, you'll want to regularly deadhead Catmint to get the best floral display. Great for sunny rockeries, it pairs well with roses and grasses. | Canva/Getty Images
