I tried £2.50 non alcoholic mulled cider - it's a game changer for Christmas

Christmas can be a time for overindulgence, but if you’re staying off or cutting down on booze, this non alcoholic cider is well worth picking up this festive season, says Rosalind Erskine.

December can be one of the most booziest times of the year, with Drinkaware stats showing that almost two-thirds (64%) of drinkers intend to drink more, in this period, than they usually do throughout the year. This may partly be because just over half of drinkers intend to have more spontaneous drinks over this period and 45% intend to have fewer drink-free days.

While a lot of us want to drink alcohol during Christmas (more than half, 57%, of UK drinkers are likely to binge drink on Christmas day, rising to 75% among 18- to 34-year-olds) many feel they should due to increased pressure from friends, and more likely, colleagues.

But, if you’re not keen on the hangover, bad sleep or anxiety that many of us feel when we drink too much, the increase in number, and quality, of non alcoholic options is a lifesaver. Even just having a drink in your hand, which looks like an alcoholic drink be it beer, G&T or wine, people tend not to ask why you’re not drinking.

As I get older, all the reasons above are making me reassess my drinking habits, and I have cut down a lot at home, and that won’t change now it’s Christmas. Last year I found a £3 supermarket non alcoholic mulled wine which I will be buying again and, in the last few days, have tried a delicious non alcoholic cider.

CHANCE Clean Cider is the UK’s first dedicated non-alcoholic apple cider that is crafted from 100% British apples bottled at 0.5% ABV. Made by traditional cider-makers in Worcestershire, CHANCE delivers a crisp and full flavour of a classic cider – without the fuzzy mornings. Plus, it’s extremely easy to make into a warm mulled cider - perfect for enjoying with a classic Christmas film.

Out of the bottle, it’s bursting with fresh apple, citrus and pineapple, and balanced by subtle woody notes, and tastes so much more complex (as it should) than an apple juice.

To mull it, you just pour the bottle into a pan, add star anise and a cinnamon stick, and heat until warm, not boiling, then serve with a slice of apple.

Founder John Logue (previously at Lucky Saint & CROSSIP) created CHANCE to give cider-lovers more choice without restriction, delivering a premium drink that breeds real connections, adventure and joint experiences.

He said of the brand: “Cider is part of our culture, but if you’re not drinking, your options are limited. I wanted to change that. CHANCE gives people the freedom to enjoy the taste and atmosphere they love – without compromise. It’s for those who want to say yes to the pub, yes to the pint, and still feel great the next day.”

Mulled wine and cider are my favourite go-to festive drinks, and with these additions to my December shop, I won’t wake up feeling awful so they’re one swap I am willing to make.

CHANCE is available to buy on their website, Amazon and The Wine Society. Their ciders can also be found in Prezzo Italian restaurants across the UK. Pick up a bottle for £2.50 here or a 12 pack £24, here.
