There's only one Scottish entry listed in Michelin’s best dining pubs guide – and it’s in Edinburgh

The Michelin Eating out in Pubs Guide for 2018 is released today, revealing the best UK establishments to enjoy a fine-dining experience with a pint.

However, only one Scottish entry has made it onto the prestigious shortlist.

Edinburgh's The Scran & Scallie, the brainchild of two of the city's top Michelin starred chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack, bills itself as 'Edinburgh's leading gastropub' and is the only venue north of the border to make it onto the list.

The Pointer in Buckinghamshire scooped the top prize of Pub of the Year, a decision made from a pool of over 470 candidates.

A "charming 18th Century red-brick inn", The Pointer is owned by David and Fiona Howden and run by a young team who also raise award-winning cattle and pigs on a 240-acre farm.

An adjoining butcher’s shop sells their meats, which are also used in the pub kitchen, along with countless other organic ingredients.

Rebecca Burr, editor of the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs guide, said: “Not only is it a delightful place, but it is exceedingly well run by a young, personable team."

A frequently changing menu offers a good range of modern dishes with a first rate presentation.

"Refinement and precision are there in equal measure."

As an aside, it’s even thought that the Great Train Robbery was planned - and the stolen money divided up - at the pub.
