The distillery will be added to Ayrshire's already rich distilling landscape with William Grant & Son’s Girvan and Ailsa Bay distilleries operating in nearby Girvan.

The Lochlea Farm site already has strong links to Robert Burns, Scotland's national bard, and will help to boost tourism in the area.

Businessman Neil McGeoch was delighted by the news that South Ayrshire Council had agreed to his proposals for the site.

He told the Daily Record he had sold his pedigree Simmental cattle to make way for the distillery, he said: “I just love the whole farming way of life and the people. Letting the cows go has been a heartbreaking decision.

“It has been a decision made purely around my time commitments.”
