5. French Bulldog
Cheeky and bold, the French Bulldog will not be ignored if it wants to play - which is most of the time. Be careful not to give them too much exercise though, as they are prone to breathing problems. | AFP via Getty Images

6. Golden Retriever
Like the Labrador, the Golden Retriever loves playing fetch for hours - particularly when water is also involved. They like nothing more than splashing around in the sea, river or loch all day. | Canva/Getty Images

7. Papillon
While many see them as traditional lap dogs, few Papillons are happy sitting around all day. They like to be entertained and are full of fun and energy - which can turn into naughty behaviour if left to build up. | Getty Images for Westminster Ken

8. Portuguese Water Dog
If you are looking for a playing companion for somebody with allergies, the Portuguese Water Dog ticks all the boxes. With a hypoallergenic coat they are unlikely to make you sneeze, but are full of energy and enjoy capering with all ages. | Getty Images
