Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
Meanwhile, if you are looking for a dog that will happily play with adults, children and other dogs for hours on end, there are particular breeds that are well-known for never tiring of games.
Here are the 12 most playful breeds of dog.

1. Labrador Retriever
Originally bred to help fishermen recover nets, ropes and fish from the chilly waters of the North Atlantic, the Labrador Retriever still loves to fetch things. As anybody who has ever thrown a ball or stick for a Lab will know, you'll tire of the game long before they do. | Canva/Getty Images

2. French Bulldog
Cheeky and bold, the French Bulldog will not be ignored if it wants to play - which is most of the time. Be careful not to give them too much exercise though, as they are prone to breathing problems. | Canva/Getty Images

3. Beagle
The Beagle is a pack animal, but if it doesn't have a big group of other Beagles to run about with it then it will seek out play with whatever human or animal is closest - usually its owner. These dogs particularly love playing games with children, being patient and gentle. | Canva/Getty Images

4. Boxer
Patient, gentle and affectionate, a Boxer makes a particularly good playmate for children with their endless energy and cheery outlook on life. | Canva/Getty Images
