Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
And one thing you might like to consider is that some dogs are naturally more affectionate than others.
While some dogs just want to snuggle on your lap and will pad around after you looking for constant pats, others are more likely to be more independent minded - verging on standoffish.
Here are 12 of the most naturally affectionate breeds of dog.

5. Newfoundland
The enormous Newfoundland is known for giving its much-loved owners huge and slobbery kisses. Having one of these demonstative characters is like having a very cuddly bear around the house. | Getty Images for Westminster Ken

6. Golden Retriever
What's true of the Labrador Retriever tends to also hold for their close cousin the Golden Retriever, and that's certainly the case when it comes to huge reservoirs of affection. Plus, due to their longer hair they are arguably even more snuggly. | Getty Images

7. French Bulldog
French Bulldogs aren't fussy about where they snuggle up for their frequent naps - your bed, their bed, the couch, a pile of disguarded clothes. Their absolute favourite is on top of their owner - and they won't care if you are trying to work from home. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Greyhound
You might be forgiven for thinking the Greyhound would be too busy racing around the place to bother with sniggles - but you couldn't be more wrong. Sure, they need a good bit of exercise once a day, but otherwise they are lazy and cuddly couch potatoes with a gentle and affectionate nature that make them amazing therapy dogs. | Canva/Getty Images
