Humans are thought to have kept cats as pets for over 10,000 years, with the first domesticated felines evolving from African wildcats.
Since then they have become the world’s second most popular pet, just behind dogs when it comes to the animals we most like to welcome in to our homes and our hearts.
In the UK alone there are more than 10 million feline friends in households.
And there are a huge range of types of cat to choose from - according to The International Cat Association there are 73 ‘standardised breeds’, along with a bewildering number of crosses.
One thing to bear in mind is that some cat breeds are known for their affectionate - whereas others are more independent or even aloof.
Indeed, while cats are often thought of as being less loving than their canine colleagues, but this isn’t necessarily the case.
In fact many breeds are just as keen to snuggle up to their owners as a velcro Labrador or loving Poodle.

5. Persian
The Persian is a cat that is as cuddly as it looks - and that is 'very'. The bonus with these kitties is that they are incredibly lazy, so when they curl up on your lap they are probably there for the long run. Unfortunately, in common with other breeds with 'flat faces' they can suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) which results in breathing and feeding problems. | | Canva/Getty Images

7. Siamese
"We are Siameeiz, if you pleeiz". The Siamese cats in Disney's 'Lady and the Tramp' may have been villians but this is no factual reflection on the breed. In fact they are known for their affectionate personalities and will often follow their owner around the house gazing at them with utter and complete adoration. | AFP via Getty Images

8. American Shorthair
As the name would suggest, the American Shorthair is one of the most popular breeds of cat in the USA - it's pretty much the definition of 'housecat' on the other side of the Atlantic. Very adaptable and a perfect family pet, they tend to love being held - relishing all human contact. | Canva/Getty Images
