With millions of holidays thrown into disarray by lockdown, many people are opting to stay in the UK rather than venture abroad this summer. But staying relatively local doesn’t mean missing out on spectacular scenery and driving roads. The UK has some of the best roads for driving and sightseeing in Europe and to see which road trips were most popular with snap-happy drivers, Click4Reg took to Instagram and analysed the number of hashtags associated with the routes. Scotland’s world-famous North Coast 500 topped the table, with more than 88,000 tags but Wales was the most ‘grammed country, with five of the 15 most popular routes.

13. Buttertubs Pass, Yorkshire Dales
This challenging route takes its name from the huge limestone pot holes where, it is said, farmers used to store their butter. It’s a short route but packed with panoramic views, if you can take your eyes off the twisting Tarmac Photo: Shutterstock

14. Coastal Way, Wales
The Coastal Way winds along the eastern edge of Wales, clinging to clifftops and plunging to the sea, skirting picturesque villages and beaches. Like the NC500, it is now being presented as a broader food and travel destination Photo: Shutterstock

15. Black Mountain Pass, Wales
Popular with everyone from Sunday drivers to magazine road testers, and made famous by Top Gear this mountainous pass is a 20-mile stretch encompassing sweeping straights, challenging hairpins and stunning scenery Photo: Shutterstock
