9. Coral Beaches, Dunvegan, Skye
From the end of the minor road beyond Dunvegan Castle entrance, an easy one-mile walk leads to the Coral Beaches – a pair of blindingly white beaches made up of the bleached exoskeletons of coralline algae known as maerl. Photo: John Allan/geograph.org

10. Gullane Bents, East Lothian
The golden crescent of Gullane Bents has epic views over the Firth of Forth. Its shaggy fringe of dunes and sea buckthorn also shelters a wealth of wildlife, including seabirds and roe deer. Photo: Pascale H/CC

11. Elie Beach, Fife

12. Belhaven Bay, Dunbar
This sweep of sand runs for nearly two miles on the fringes of John Muir Country Park. Known for its surfing, it's backed by the park's romantic tableau of sand dunes, salt marsh and woodlands. Crossing a stream at its eastern end is the "Bridge to Nowhere", which appears to have become marooned at high tide. Photo: AJ/Flickr/CC
