Scotland in 1960: Here are 19 incredible pictures of life in Scotland 65 years ago - from royal visits to rugby

Things looked very different in Scotland at the start of the 1960s.

There was plenty going on in the world in 1960 - the year that saw John F. Kennedy elected President of the United States of America.

It saw Chile hit by the most powerful earthquake ever recorded, the temprature of the Cold War plummet when the U-2 American spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union, the birth control pill approved as safe to use, and Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann captured.

In Britain future Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance was born, Manchester City signed a 20-year-old Denis Law for a record £55,000, Lonnie Donegan went to number one with My Old Man's a Dustman, and the Grand National was televised for the first time.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Cheapside Street Whisky Bond Fire in Glasgow claimed the lives of 19 firemen - becoming the UK's worst peacetime fire services disaster.

Here are 19 pictures to take you back to Scotland in 1960.
