Scotland’s richest man and largest landowner has made his latest acquisition - a pub on the banks of Loch Ness.

Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen has added to his vast Highland portfolio with the purchase of the Dores Inn.

The pub could be shut for two years while his company, Wildland Ltd, upgrades the property.

The company said it would work closely with the local community to resolve issues around parking, public toilets and access to a nearby beach.

The Dores Inn sits right on the water’s edge and close to one of Mr Povlsen’s key hospitality businesses Aldourie Castle. The pub is now closed following confirmation of the purchase, with the venue due to open for business once again in 2026/27.

Tim Kirkwood, chief executive of WildLand said: “When we heard that long-term sustainability of business at the site could be enhanced through investment in the premises, it became clear that we should look at solutions that will align well with the interests of our business and the local community alike.

“We are now committing a substantial programme of investment in the fabric of the premises, with a view to getting the business back up and running there as a pub and restaurant in a very special location.

“We look forward to engaging and sharing detailed plans with the village once a full review has been undertaken.”

Wildland Ltd was set up by Mr Povlsen to manage his 220,000 acres in Scotland, much of it spread across seven estates in Sutherland and five more in the Cairngorms.

Mr Povlsen, who forged much of his fortune in the fashion retail business, has focused his investments in Scotland in large-scale nature restoration projects and his ‘Scandi-Scot’ style of high-end hospitality.

The Dores Inn sits just over a mile from Aldourie Castle, a 300-year-old pile that is rented out as an exclusive stay property. It was here that Mr Povlsen celebrated his 50th birthday with singer Lionel Richie flown in to perform.

Last week, Danish media reported that Mr Povlsen was exploring the possibility of investing in Dundee United Football Club.
