We’ve all seen ‘only 90s kids will remember’ posts which remind us of the days of tamagotchi, rewinding cassette tapes with pencils, and the joy of playing 3D Pinball on your Windows 95 desktop.
But what about the ‘only 90s kids from Edinburgh will remember’ editions, surely there are nostalgic novelties connected to our wee pocket of Scotland?
Well, indeed there are, and whether you grew up as a millennial or a bit before/after in Gen X or Gen Z, many of these examples will spark fond memories of your time in Edinburgh during this golden age.
Here are eighteen things that you will remember if you grew up in Edinburgh during the ‘90s.

13. You remember the opening of the Gyle shopping centre
The Gyle shopping centre opened its doors in October, 1993, and it was warmly welcomed by enthusiastic shoppers as a massive crowd formed prior to its debut. Images taken of that day see many shoppers wearing the iconically late ‘80s / early ‘90s shell suits. Photo: Submitted

14. Shopping took place at St James Shopping Centre (which now doesn’t exist)
The building has since been updated from the St James shopping centre to the St James Quarter which has an… Interesting design. Situated at the east end of Princes Street, the above is one of the oldest known images of the retail outlet which dates back to 1992. Photo: Submitted

15. You remember the Palace Hotel blaze of 1991
On the evening of June 9, 1991, some youths allegedly broke into the Palace Hotel while it was empty and started the fire that caused massive damage to the building. Sadly this resulted in the gorgeous landmark being torn down out of safety concerns. Photo: Submitted

16. We watched our drivers from the top deck of the bus
Before the dawn of the surveillance state with almost every public vicinity sporting CCTV, buses had other technology. A periscope was fitted into the driver’s cabin which allowed the driver at a glance to see what was happening upstairs, but of course this worked in reverse and young kids would often peer down and, as a game, try to do so without being caught.
