An outbreak of the highly contagious illness has closed all wards at the Highland hospital.

An NHS hospital in the Highlands has closed all wards due to an outbreak of Norovirus.

Bedford Hospital in Fort William has closed both wards due to the highly contagious illness, which causes sickness and diarrhoea.

No new patients will be admitted to the hospital, with restricted visits also in place. Those who feel their visit is necessary are being advised to contact staff in advance.

In addition, the health board have asked that anyone with symptoms - or who lives with someone displaying symptoms - such as diarrhoea and/or vomiting avoid visiting for at least 48 hours, until the illness has cleared.

What should you do if you think you have norovirus?

Due to the highly contagious nature of the illness, those who believe they have norovirus are advised to stay at home.

It can be managed at home with symptoms typically lasting a few days. It is important that you rest and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

It is also advised that you stay away from work, school or any health or social care setting for 48 hours after symptoms have passed.
