Companies that provide core architecture dominate Scotsman Insider’s Tech 50

Scotland’s technology sector is often framed through the lens of start-ups and funding success stories.

The data behind this year’s Scotsman Insider Tech 50, however, tells a different story.

Ranked by turnover and drawn from our Scotland Top Companies database in partnership with Experian Market IQ, this list highlights the 50 largest technology businesses that are headquartered and founded in Scotland, excluding those with overseas parents or ownership.

The ranking doesn’t have a narrow software narrative, but a picture of industrial depth and infrastructure scale.

More than two thirds of the companies in this year’s ranking sit within hardware, deep tech, cloud infrastructure and energy systems.

These are businesses building the backbone of the digital economy through grid technology, managed infrastructure, data platforms, embedded systems and mission-critical engineering solutions.

Many operate in regulated or capital-intensive sectors, serving energy networks, financial institutions, healthcare providers and public bodies.

Software & SaaS firms account for a smaller proportion of the list than some might expect.

Scotland’s strength appears to lie in companies that combine engineering heritage with digital capability, firms that build systems, not just apps.

Turnover at scale tends to follow long-term contracts, infrastructure deployment and specialist expertise.

Karen Meechan, CEO at ScotlandIS said: “Lists like this remind us that Scotland’s tech sector extends far beyond start-ups. While they remain a vital part of the ecosystem, it’s important we shine a light on the other companies that are driving innovation and creating real impact across the wider industry.

“In the age of AI, cybersecurity and deep tech, the infrastructure that underpins these technologies has never been more important. It’s great to see so many companies in this year’s ranking – including several of our members – building the capabilities that critical sectors rely on. It’s further proof that Scotland’s engineering heritage, combined with growing digital expertise, is becoming a force to be reckoned with globally.”
