Exclusive:Revealed: The Scotland 500 list of country's top performing companies

The inaugural Scotsman Insider 500 looks at the top performing companies in Scotland by profit and turnover

The Scotland 500 is a portrait of the real Scottish economy.

At its core are the solid, dependable businesses that employ thousands of people across the country, companies that rarely dominate headlines but quietly keep Scotland working every day.

These are mature, profitable organisations rather than unicorns: firms built on steady growth, long-term investment and deep local roots.

Alongside them sit Scotland’s major corporations, delivering large-scale jobs, attracting investment and projecting Scottish expertise around the globe.

Together they form the backbone of the national economy.

The wider economic climate remains an important backdrop to the list.

Interest rates currently stand at 3.75 per cent, well below the peak above 5 per cent seen during 2023 and 2024, but still materially higher than the ultra-low borrowing costs that shaped much of the past decade.

UK inflation was 3.0% in the 12 months to January 2026, down from 3.4 per cent in December 2025, yet remains above the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target.

The pressure on input costs has softened, but has not disappeared.

The UK unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over was 5.2 per cent in the three months to December 2025, up from 3.8 per cent for the August to October period.

That points to a cooling rather than a weakening jobs market.

Business failures, however, have moved back towards more normal levels.

Scottish corporate insolvencies are rising, with a rate of 52.1 per 10,000 companies in the 12 months to January 2026, up from 51.3 the previous year.

For strong, well-capitalised companies, this environment is creating opportunities to consolidate and invest.

The past 12 months have shown how Scotland 500 companies are responding.

Johnston Carmichael Wealth was sold to Partners Wealth Management LLP in a deal announced on 5 March 2025, a transaction that won Deal of the Year (£10m–£50m) at Insider Media’s Scotland Dealmakers Awards after judges praised the firm’s in-house execution.

The regional data underlines how broad that corporate base is. Glasgow remains Scotland’s largest business centre with 121 companies on the list, followed by Edinburgh with 68 and Aberdeen with 53.

A strong second tier of hubs – Perth, Inverness, Stirling and Dundee – confirms that economic power extends far beyond the major cities.

Sector patterns are equally revealing.

Property and construction firms dominate most regions, as in last week’s Owner Managed Business 100 ranking, supported by a substantial manufacturing and engineering presence.

Retail and wholesale businesses are concentrated in the west, while energy and utilities remain central to the north-east.

Financial services cluster around Edinburgh, and technology is most visible in the central belt. From logistics to healthcare and food and drink, the mix highlights a diverse economy grounded in real activity and real jobs.

Taken together, the Scotland 500 shows a corporate landscape that is diverse in industry which is one of its strengths.
