Marks & Spencer: The 32 Scottish locations targeted for new M&S Food stores in huge expansion - full list
“The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK” – Alex Freudmann, M&S Food
Scotland could get up to 32 new Marks & Spencer stores after the retail stalwart released a list of target locations for new food branches.
The potential Scottish sites, including Cumbernauld, Inverness and Livingston, form part of a longer UK-wide wish list of 500 target locations.
M&S said it was particularly looking for large sites that could stock the full range of food produce, growing the target size of its food stores to an average of 18,000 square feet. It is aiming to double the size of its successful food business.

Bosses said unlocking new sites would help deliver the group’s plan to “modernise and rotate” the M&S store estate - a move that has already led to some main store closures, including in Scotland - giving it a footprint of 180 “full-line” stores and 420 food-focused outlets.
The food stores would be in the new “renewal format” with an extended range of M&S food, wider aisles for bigger shopping trolleys and larger car parks for more family shoppers. It noted that its food store in Selby, North Yorkshire, opened on Three Lakes retail park last year, had outperformed expectations, delivering above average food market share growth in the region.
More than half of the stores across the M&S estate, including convenience stores, are expected to be in the renewal format by April 2028.
Alex Freudmann, managing director, M&S Food, said: “The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth.
“With more than 20 stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster. Our team wants new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.”
