Hundreds of new “earn as you learn” roles are being created in Scotland as part of a major green jobs drive, offering people the chance to build a career in renewable energy while getting paid to train.
Electricity network operator by SSEN Transmission, part of energy giant SSE, has announced plans to create 600 new early-career positions by 2030, with opportunities across the north of Scotland including Wick, Elgin, Shetland, and Aberdeenshire.
The move marks a huge boost for Scotland’s fast-growing renewables sector and represents what the company called a “significant investment in the next generation of talent powering the north of Scotland’s transmission network.”
The new roles will span a wide range of disciplines, from engineering and environmental planning to project management and digital operations, offering hands-on training through apprenticeships, graduate schemes, summer placements and trainee programmes.

SSEN Transmission’s managing director, Rob McDonald, said the roles will form a crucial part of delivering a cleaner, more secure energy system for the UK.
He said: “These ‘earn as you learn’ roles are not just jobs. They’re pathways to purpose-driven, sustainable careers that will shape the energy landscape for generations to come.”
The company has undergone rapid growth in recent years, expanding from around 400 employees in 2019 to 2,500 today. As part of its ongoing recruitment strategy, SSEN has pledged that at least 5% of its workforce will be in paid training or early-career roles.
This forms part of SSE’s wider £22 billion five-year investment plan, designed to accelerate the UK’s transition to clean energy and support tens of thousands of jobs nationwide.
First Minister John Swinney, who attended the announcement at SSE’s training centre in Perth, hailed the move as “great news for Scotland’s workforce, renewables industries, economy, and our green, clean future.”
He said: “Apprenticeships play a critical role in providing lifelong, in-demand skills. We’re proud to work with employers like SSEN to create good, green jobs that help Scotland reach its full renewables potential.”
