Data from the Scotsman Insider’s Owner Managed Business 100 ranking highlights a group of firms with the financial foundations to grow.

EBITDA margins at or around 10 per cent point to disciplined operations, while retained earnings and cash balances reflect years of consistent performance.

On paper, the conditions for expansion are in place.

But the data also shows that those foundations are being used in very different ways.

Some businesses are converting efficiency into scale, generating high levels of revenue with relatively small teams.

Others are operating at significant size but remain heavily dependent on labour, making further expansion more complex.

In several cases, strong retained earnings point to accumulated profitability rather than capital that is readily deployable.

Retained earnings are the profits a business has reinvested or held onto over the years.

Cash may be tied up in working capital, reinvested into assets or held as a buffer against an uncertain trading environment.

The result is that financial strength does not always translate into forward momentum.

This reflects a wider theme emerging from Scotsman Insider’s owner-managed business roundtable.

Scotland does not lack capable companies or proven business models.

Instead, the challenge lies in how those businesses move beyond stability towards sustained expansion.

Strategy, structure and risk appetite all play a role.

Some firms are positioned to invest and grow while others are optimising for resilience, maintaining strong margins without pushing for aggressive scale.

The five companies profiled here each report margins at or around 10 per cent, but their financial profiles point to very different routes to growth.

GLENRATH FARMS

Glenrath Farms is one of the UK’s largest egg producers, supplying major retailers and food service clients from its Borders base.

It combines turnover in 2024 of £90.96m with just 193 employees, generating more than £470k in revenue per employee.

That year it was supported by £58m in cash at the bank and £115.9m in retained earnings.

The profile is of a highly efficient business with significant financial strength. The model shows how productivity can translate into scalable growth.

CASTLE VIEW

Castle View is a diversified services group spanning leisure management, food manufacturing, and public health services.

Based in Bridge of Allan, it manages leisure centres for local authorities, produces food for major retailers, and delivers community health programmes.

The group generated turnover of £358.8m in 2024 with aworkforce of 5,582 employees. Revenue per employee of £64,000 highlights the group’s labour-intensive model, while EBITDA of £41.7m delivers a margin of11.63 per cent.

At this scale, further growth is likely to depend on improving productivity rather than expanding headcount.

BALMORAL GROUP

Balmoral Group is an engineering and manufacturing business based in Aberdeen, specialising in offshore energy, marine, and industrial products.

In year-ending 2024, it delivered a turnover of £132.4 million and EBITDA of £14.9m, producing a margin of 11 per cent.

In 2024, it had 615 employees with revenue per employee of £215,292, reflecting its more labour-intensive model.

The business appears positioned for steady expansion rather than rapid scale.

OGILVIE GROUP

Ogilvie Group is a family-owned construction, housebuilding and vehicle leasing business operating across the UK.

Stirling-based, it reports EBITDA of £102.8m on turnover of £460.9m. It has 540 employees, and revenue per employee stands at £853,442, with £106m in retained earnings.

The group’s margin profile is significantly above typical levels for the sector, and is likely to reflect one-off factors or accounting treatment rather than underlying operating performance.

DC THOMSON & COMPANY

DC Thomson & Company is a Dundee-based media group with interests spanning publishing, digital media, and data-led businesses.

In 2024, the firm reported a turnover of £153.9m and pre-tax profit of £93.8m, with EBITDA of £44.7m. Revenue per employee of £117,103 indicates a relatively efficient model at scale.

Retained earnings that year of £983.9m highlight long-term capital accumulation.

The balance sheet provides flexibility, but future growth will depend on how that capital is deployed.
