13 renewables companies breaking new ground with sustainability initiatives
The green economy is no longer a potential economic driver, it is already here, delivering real impact
We look at the companies pioneering clean initiatives here in Scotland.

We look at 13 companies, in or close to being in the Renewables 50, at the sharper end of that shift, whose activity – whether megawatts, retrofits, or grid balancing – is creating real wealth and economic growth. The spread of companies on this map runs from SSE and ScottishPower’s scale down to consultancies like Natural Power and Green Cat, quietly engineering hundreds of megawatts of community-owned capacity without their brand name on a turbine.
The list also takes in the unglamorous end of the transition, Warmworks and Aberdeen Heat and Power, both fighting fuel poverty, and MVV Environment Baldovie, turning Dundee’s black bags into heat. Nominations for the Made in Scotland Awards, and this year’s Sustainability Initiative of the Year category sits squarely on the same ground. If your business or one you work with qualifies, nominate them online at insidermedia.com/event/made-in-scotland-awards-2026
Aberdeen Heat and Power Company
Set up by Aberdeen City Council in 2002, this not-for-profit company operates combined heat and power networks supplying low-carbon, low-cost heat to thousands of high-rise council tenants across the city, cutting typical heating bills by around 40 per cent while directly tackling fuel poverty.
Flexitricity
Flexitricity, an Edinburgh-founded demand-response pioneer acquired by Drax in April 2026, operates the country’s largest such portfolio, co-ordinating more than 900MW of flexible power assets through a 24/7 control room to help balance the grid and ease the integration of green energy.
Flotation Energy
A TEPCO-owned developer advancing Green Volt, an 80km offshore floating wind farm set to become Europe’s first commercial-scale project of its kind. Generating up to 560MW, it will electrify North Sea oil and gas platforms while supplying the UK grid, cutting carbon emissions substantially.
AMP Clean Energy
AMP Clean Energy operates the UK’s leading biomass heat business from its Lochaber base, running more than 1,000 boilers for schools, hospitals and businesses. The wider group is expanding into urban battery storage and grid flexibility, helping to decarbonise industrial heat demand.
MVV Environment Baldovie
This energy-from-waste facility converts up to an annual 220,000 tonnes of Dundee detritus into electricity, diverting rubbish from landfill under long-term contracts with Dundee and Angus councils, part of German utility MVV’s wider UK sustainable waste-to-energy portfolio and net-zero strategy.
SSE
Perth-headquartered, SSE is one of Britain’s biggest generators of renewable electricity, spanning onshore and offshore wind projects, hydro and pumped storage.
The company is successfully progressing several major North Sea offshore wind projects, and pouring billions into upgrading Scotland’s transmission network, underpinning the country’s net-zero transition and supporting regional jobs.
ScottishPower
Glasgow-based ScottishPower generates its UK electricity entirely from renewable sources and is part of Iberdrola’s global green energy push.
Its network arm invests heavily in reinforcement across central and southern Scotland to accommodate rising renewable generation onto the UK grid.
Warmworks
Edinburgh-based Warmworks manages Warmer Homes Scotland, the Scottish Government’s fuel poverty scheme, on behalf of a joint venture between Energy Saving Trust, Changeworks and Everwarm. Since 2015 it has upgraded insulation and heating in more than 50,000 homes
Natural Power
Castle Douglas-HQed Natural Power is an independent renewable energy consultancy founded in 1995, working exclusively on green energy projects across wind, solar, hydro and storage. Its full lifecycle service, from feasibility through asset management, has supported over 800 projects.
Smart Metering Systems
Glasgow-based SMS installs and manages smart meters, battery storage, solar panels and EV chargepoints, managing over six million meters following its 2025 combination with Horizon Energy Infrastructure. SMS is committed to reaching net-zero by 2030 and backs a smart energy island in Orkney.
CSM Sustainable Energy
This Aberdeen-based developer is building battery storage at existing operational wind farms Aikengall IIA and the Millour Hill/Wardlaw Wood site in North Ayrshire, plus a co-located solar farm at Wardlaw Wood. It reuses established grid connections to balance renewable output and extend infrastructure value.
Green Cat Renewables
Founded in 2005 and based in Biggar with offices in Edinburgh and Livingston, this consultancy has supported more than 800MW of wind, solar and hydro projects, with a strong backing for community-owned schemes. Its wider group is developing green hydrogen facilities in Orkney and Perthshire.
Locogen
This Edinburgh renewable energy developer and consultancy works across wind, solar, hydro and storage at every scale, from utility-sized wind and solar projects to community-owned schemes. Its track record includes Scotland’s largest shared ownership wind farm and largest solar-battery co-location.
