Traitors to be turned into 'bold and surprising' West End show by production company behind Hamnet

The play will be performed in an as-yet unnamed West End theatre

Hit TV show The Traitors is to be turned into a West End show by the production company behind Hamnet.

The play will create a new story inspired by the format of the programme, which saw the fourth series won last week by Lewis-born Stephen Libby and fellow Traitor Rachel Duffy.

It will follow the story of a group of faithfuls who try to root out the traitors in their ranks.

The play will be jointly created by Neal Street Studios, co-founded by Oscar winner Sam Mendes, and Studio Lambert, which makes the BBC TV series, which is filmed in Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Written by John Finnemore, known for TV's Good Omens and radio series Cabin Pressure, it will be performed in an as-yet unnamed London theatre next year.

Studio Lambert chief executive Stephen Lambert said the team would "reimagine the show as a bold and surprising theatrical performance".

"Faithful fans should expect an intense, joyful night out as we reveal a thrilling new hunting ground for our Traitors," he said.

It will be directed by Olivier Award winner Rob Hastie, who is behind shows including Operation Mincemeat and Standing at the Sky's Edge, and is deputy artistic director of London's National Theatre.

Caro Newling, co-founder of Neal Street Productions, said the team had "curated a team of brilliant faithful theatre-makers", led by Hastie and Finnemore, "to bring a bold, structural twist to the format that only the live medium can provide".

Other TV series which have inspired theatre shows include Stranger Things, which is being performed in London’s Phoenix Theatre as prequel Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

Alan Carr, who won the celebrity version of the show last year, has announced a new TV series where he will search the UK - including Scotland - for a castle home after being inspired by his Traitors castle stay.
