What time is Rebus on tonight? Why is it at a different time this weekend? And what's expected in episode 5?

Rebus fans will be on tenterhooks to find out what happens in episode five of the BBC series as it moves to make way for football fans to watch the UEFA European Football Championship.

With the football kicking off with the Scotland Germany game from Munich at 8pm on ITV the penultimate episode of the detective series has been moved to 10:30pm-11:30pm tonight on BBC Scotland and it will be aired again on BBC Two on Saturday at 9:10pm and next Friday, 21st May at 12:10am on BBC One.

The new adaptation of Ian Rankin’s detective novels series with a script by Gregory Burke and set in contemporary Edinburgh sees Outlander’s Richard Rankin bring a new edge to the role, with support from a talented cast including Brian Ferguson, Lucie Shorthouse, Stuart Bowman and Amy Manson. The series plot is a conglomeration of cases and mysteries involving the detective from Ian Rankin’s series of 24 novels to date and viewers will recognise characters like Ger Cafferty and his police buddy George.

“We’ve got a bit more vitality in this version because he is at an earlier stage of his life,” says Rankin.

“That brings with it a different psychology, a different mentality to Rebus, and for me that was one of the big differences that I found really exciting. He’s much closer to his younger days and his time in the military and he’s at that tipping point of losing a grip on himself. So it’s incredibly dynamic and the other characters are so richly written that it brings it all together in a really exciting new way.”

In episodes one to three we’ve seen Richard Rankin’s contemporary cop embroiled in an investigation with new partner Siobhan Clarke that starts with a street attack and spreads to implicate his old nemesis Ger Cafferty, along with his brother Michael and his ex-army mates.

In episode five, after a gruesome attack, Rebus has a lot of difficult questions to answer from Gill Templer and Professional Standards officer Malcolm Fox about his dealings with both Cafferty and Michael. After an attack on Michael’s home it’s time for Rebus and his brother to swallow their differences and join forces as they plan to mete out retribution. Meanwhile Rebus’ ex-wife Rhona reaches out to help Michael’s wife Chrissie and her family - but will there be a limit to how far she is willing to go when things get out of hand? And Rebus’ new recruit sidekick Siobhan is proving her worth, whatever her boss’s reservations may be, after she makes a breakthrough with new information from an unexpected source.
