The Traitors final review: Tears and tension in the Scottish castle as this epic season comes to a close
The Traitors season four came to an end on Friday 23 January, and it was a fitting closure to an electric three weeks writes Rosalind Erskine.
It has become the highlight of the long, dark month of January. Kicking off on New Year’s day, many were wondering how season four of the UK Traitors could outshine the ratings-busting celebrity version which aired in October last year. Thankfully the producers had an ace up their sleeve with the secret traitor and from that first episode there has been tension and drama abound in Ardross Castle.
Spoilers ahead for the season four final of The Traitors

The final was always going to be tense, and kicked off with the shock exit of James Baker - one of the most memorable and chaotic players - who was banished when it came down to the chest of chance, after a voting deadlock, between him and Rachel Duffy.
This left two Traitors in the game, Rachel and Isle of Lewis native, Stephen Libby to make it to the end and seal their victory against the three remaining Faithful.
After the banishment, and further traitorous scheming, all the remaining contestants - Stephen, Rachel, Jack Butler, Faraaz Noor and Jade Scott - undertook the final, adrenaline-inducing mission and added a whopping £19,000 to the prize, making the total winnings £95,750.
It was then on to what’s surely the hardest round table of all and with no banished player allowed to state whether they were a Traitor or Faithful, it was all to play for.
After the banishment of Jade, it was the endgame and down to Stephen, Rachel, Faraaz and Jack to fight it out for the cash prize.
Traitors Rachel and Stephen held their nerve, stuck together and banished Faraaz together, after he voted for Stephen and Jack voted for Rachel.
The final three - Stephen, Jack and Rachel - voted one more time and it was Jack who was banished leaving Traitors, Rachel and Stephen - who were faithful to each other - to split the prize fund.
“I’m just a wee boy from the Isle of Lewis, this type of stuff doesn’t happen to me” said a delighted Stephen in his final piece to camera.
Four seasons in, a format may start to become predictable, but it’s not the case with this season of The Traitors. From the secret traitor reveal, excellent theories, the confessional, the ceremonial dagger and cliffhangers to rousing arguments and a shedload of drama, it was one of the best yet. Roll on next New Year.
