Should I Marry A Murderer? New Netflix docuseries explores how a Scottish woman exposed her fiancé as a murderer

Should I Marry A Murderer? explores Dr Caroline Muirhead’s role in collecting evidence against her fiancé who confessed to killing charity cyclist Tony Parsons.

A new documentary series will soon arrive on Netflix, diving into the shocking story behind the murder of a Scottish cyclist.

Titled Should I Marry A Murderer?, the three-episode series will tell the story of forensic pathologist Caroline Muirhead, whose perfect romance with Alexander, or Sandy, McKellar took a dark turn after becoming engaged.

In a trailer for the docuseries, Dr Muirhead states: “Imagine you fall in love with someone who made you feel accepted, wanted, seen, who made you feel whole and loved and special. And you are just so happy.

“And then they say to you, ‘I've done a horrible, horrible thing.’ Something so vile, it flips your entire world upside down.”

At the heart of the series, is the death of Tony Parsons, a 63-year-old “much loved” grandfather and former Royal Navy submariner who was attempting to cycle 100 miles from Fort William to his home in Tillicoultry to raise money for charity.

He never completed his goal, instead disappearing after being struck by a vehicle on the A82 near Bridge of Orchy on September 29, 2017.

Alexander McKellar and his twin brother Robert McKellar are both now serving time in prison for their role in Parsons death - something which only came to light because of Dr Muirhead.

Should I Marry A Murderer? tells the story behind how his killers were caught, and how - as the Netflix synopsis describes - Dr Muirhead was a “fiancée turned key witness” as she gathered evidence of her partner’s guilt.

Here is everything you need to know about Should I Marry A Murderer? - including when it’s out.

Who is Dr Caroline Muirhead? How the woman behind Netflix’s Should I Marry A Murderer? helped catch a killer

Dr Caroline Muirhead is a forensic pathologist who fell in love with Alexander McKellar, a farmer on the Auch Estate alongside his twin brother, after meeting him on Tinder.

Two months into their relationship, and Muirhead asked him if there was anything in his past which would impact their future.

He then confessed that he had killed a man - Tony Parsons - while drink driving and had concealed his body in a shallow grave with the help of his brother.

Mr Parsons was struck on September 29, 2017. Police had been investigating his death for three years, with the case often referred to as “The Vanishing Cyclist”.

After accepting McKellar’s offer to show her where the body was hidden, where Dr Muirhead dropped a can of Red Bull. She then called the police, describing the location to them.

When the Red Bull can was found, a major investigation was launched.

Alexander McKellar told Dr Muirhead that he and his brother Robert had spent the day deerstalking with a German hunting group before going for a drink with them at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel.

When making their way home, he was distracted by oncoming headlights and struck Mr Parsons. While “panicking”, McKellar and his brother returned to the A82 to move the cyclist's body and possessions to the Auch Estate, burying them. They then later used an excavator to bury him in a peat bog, where they disposed of animal carcasses.

McKellar admitted to leaving his bicycle behind a waterfall on the estate, which was never recovered.

What happened to Alexander and Robert McKellar?

Alexander McKellar was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to culpable homicide in 2023, with he and his brother also admitting to attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
