Of course there are many different types of film within the genre, from gross-out gore and so-called ‘torture porn’, to atmosheric slow-burn chillers and the type of ‘elevated’ horrors that have subtexts taking in everything from dementia to the loss of a child.

9. The Haunting in Connecticut
'The Haunting in Connecticut' is the only film franchaise that has two entries on this list. The original is also said to be based on a true story, this time about a family with a son suffering from cancer who move into a former mortuary and become haunted by violent supernatureal forces. There are 26 jump scares on the way - six fewer than its sequel. | Contributed

10. Freddy vs. Jason
Not even the biggest fan of 2003's 'Freddy vs. Jason' would claim it's one of the best films in the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' or 'Friday the 13th' franchises - it's the eighth installment of the former and the eleventh of the latter - but it's fun seeing the two monsters do battle. It's also got plenty of terrifying moments, with 24 jump scares. | Contributed

11. Insidious
The first in James Wan's hugely successful 'Insidious' franchaise stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a couple whose son goes into a coma and becomes possessed by a variety of demons. It has 24 jump scares. It's a series of diminishing returns though, with the next three films having 22, 15 and 15 jump scares respectively. | Contributed

12. It Chapter Two
The second part of Andy Muschietti's adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a group of children who take on a dark power in their small American town - personified by the terrifying Pennywise the Clown - was less well reviewed than the first. It makes this list by having 24 jump scares - one more than Chapter One. It's the first part that's the better film though, so you should really watch them both - and jump 47 times! | Contributed
