The very nature of Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness means we will be meeting various versions and variants of characters we know and love in the MCU. What’s more, trailers have teased glimpses of people from other Marvel-adjacent universes sneaking into the MCU.
From X-Men to characters from Marvel’s animated series, What If…?, there are plenty of cameos in the Doctor Strange sequel. You wouldn’t be blamed for struggling to keep all the key players straight in your head.
To help, we’ve gathered together the backstories and key points to know about various characters believed to appear.
Of course, to truly brush up on the entire MCU before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we recommend carving out time for our complete watchlist on Disney Plus. However, read on for a guide to some of the key characters we suspect will play major roles in the sequel.

5. Tommy and Billy Maximoff
With Wanda, we also get her twin sons, Tommy and Billy. The boys have powers of their own, with Tommy inheriting his uncle Pietro's speed and Billy taking after his mother's magic, being able to cast reality-warping spells and teloportation. In the comics, he can only cast spells if he can hear them. The twins' nicknames are Wiccan and Speed in the comics, and they are suspected to play roles in the Young Avengers that the MCU is setting up. Photo: Disney / Marvel

6. Charles Xavier aka Professor X
Perhaps the most far-reaching revelation: the appearance of Charles Xavier in the trailers means that we will be getting at least a partial X-Men/MCU crossover. It's heavily suggested that Professor X is leading the Illuminati, aligned with Mordo and intervening in Doctor Strange's actions. Whether he will be an ally to Strange or there to stop him going any further remains to be seen. Photo: Disney / Marvel

7. Captain Marvel Variant (Maria Rambeau?)
This appearance is a little less defined. In the quick flash we get, fans believe this character will be a Captain Marvel variant, perhaps a version where Maria Rambeau flew into space and got superpowers. Others suspect it might be a version of Monica Rambeau - or even someone completely different. Photo: Disney / Marvel

8. Captain Carter
Finally: a character who inspired a lot of excitement without showing their face. We see a flash of Captain Carter's shield, suggesting that storylines explored in Marvel's What If...? might appear in Multiverse of Madness. Appearing in the first episode of the animated series, Captain Carter is a Captain America variant where Peggy Carter took the super serum instead of Steve Rogers. She is recognisable from the similar shield sporting a Union Jack instead of the American flag. Photo: Disney / Marvel
