HE'S the Scots-born movie star famous for playing the tenth Doctor Who.

But now David Tennant has taken time out from acting – to judge a Father’s Day card competition run by Edinburgh charity Circle.

The actor is currently filming the third series of multi-award-winning crime drama Broadchurch, but took a break on set to pick out his favourite design with the help of fellow cast members Olivia Colman and Georgina Campbell.

Nine-year-old Shelby Ritchie’s card – based on the outline of her hand – emerged triumphant, but all three judges had a tough time choosing from the high-quality entries.

Runners-up Logan Smith, 12, and Dani Pavlov, nine, also shone with their colourful designs featuring a large number one and a smart-looking dad respectively.

In a special video showing the actors championing their winners, Georgina Campbell – who is set to have a “significant role” in the upcoming eight-part ITV series – labelled Logan’s design “brilliant”.

Tennant, who has been a patron of the charity since 2005, previously called the work it does “invaluable”.

He said: “I agreed [to become patron] because I really believe in what this charity does.

“They turn around the lives of vulnerable children by strengthening the family unit. Circle refuses to let people’s past determine their future.”

Bosses at Circle, formerly Family Service Unit Scotland, said they hoped Tennant’s involvement would help raise the vital facility’s profile.

Their Father’s Day card competition – made up of entries from children Circle helps support – is part of the Scottish Government-backed “Year of the Dad”, a celebration of fathers everywhere organised by Fathers Network Scotland.
