A new YouGov survey has revealed that the most popular sitcom in Britain was made in America,
Friends led the way in the poll, which was carried out in honour of the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Fawlty Towers, which also appeared in the top-ranked programmes.
Those taking part in the survey were simply asked to write the name of their favourite television sitcom, if they had one.
More than half of responders did and came up with 137 different answers to the question.
Here are the shows that were chosen by most people.

5. Fawlty Towers
'Fawlty Towers', whose 50th birthday was the reason the survey was carried out, was also three per cent of responders' choice. The legendary show, which only ran for two series, sees John Cleese play a manic Torquay hotelier. | Contributed

6. The Office
Also in the three per cent club is 'The Office', the mockumentary series that made stars out of co-creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. It also launched the careers of the likes of Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook. | Contributed

7. Modern Family
Yet another sitcom that was named by three per cent of those who completed the survey, 'Modern Family' is another mockumentary, this time following the lives of three related families in Los Angeles. | Contributed

8. Not Going Out
Having run since 2006, 'Not Going Out' is the BBC's second longest running sitcom ever (after 'Last of the Summer Wine'). It stars Lee Mack as a version of himself living in a London flat, with Mack the only actor to have appeared in every episode. It's the last show to have been chosen by three per cent of survey-takers. | Contributed
