George Square is aglow with festive cheer as Glasgow’s much-anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On event officially launched the city’s winter celebrations. Held on Sunday, November 17, the event illuminated the square with dazzling lights and a breathtaking light-and-projection show on the City Chambers, marking the start of the 2024 festive season.
This beloved annual tradition drew nearly 10,000 ticketed attendees who gathered to witness the spectacular display. The event featured a host of exciting performances, including those by Scottish singer-songwriter Nathan Evans and popular music duo SAINT PHNX. Attendees were also treated to festive fun from the cast of the Pavilion Theatre’s pantomime Beauty and the Beastie as well as vibrant musical performances from Soul Nation Choir and On Repeat.
A Magical Evening of Festive Cheer

Hosted by Clyde 1 presenters George Bowie and Cassi Gillespie, the night captured the essence of Christmas for Glaswegians of all ages. The City’s Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, expressed her joy at the success of the event:
"The city lights switch-on signals the start of the festive season. It’s a hugely popular family-friendly event that never loses its magic. Capturing the essence and excitement of Christmas – whatever age you are.”
George Bowie echoed this sentiment, saying:
"It feels like the countdown to Christmas really has begun after another brilliant Christmas Lights Switch-On, with the wonderful people of Glasgow. Cassi and I love this event and are so grateful to Glasgow Life for inviting us every year. It’s such a highlight for us."

Cassi Gillespie added:
"This event gets better every year. It’s such a joy to see the festive spirit come alive in Glasgow. Special thanks to Nathan Evans, SAINT PHNX, the cast of Beauty and the Beastie, Soul Nation Choir, and On Repeat for making this night so magical."
The evening culminated in a heartwarming moment when two lucky winners, siblings Reighgan Thomson, 15, and Rudi Thomson, 11, were given the honor of pressing the magic button that illuminated George Square. Reighgan summed up the excitement:
"That was the most magical, marvellous night ever! I loved it, and now I can’t wait for Christmas."
