Where myth meets the modern world, San Francisco Ballet’s Mere Mortals will be at Edinburgh Playhouse for EIF 2026.

Edinburgh International Festival will host the European premiere of San Francisco Ballet’s reimagining of Pandora’s Box.

Titled Mere Mortals, the production will see the dance company return to the festival for the first time in more than 20 years. Exploring the myth from the perspective of our tech-driven age, the show is a collaboration between composer Sam Shepherd and choreographer Aszure Barton, who is known for blurring classical ballet with contemporary dance.

Mere Mortals will be at Edinburgh Playhouse for three days towards the end of August, so here is everything you need to know about tickets.

EIF: Here’s when Mere Mortals will be at Edinburgh Playhouse

Edinburgh Playhouse will welcome the San Francisco Ballet from Friday, August 28 until Sunday, August 30.

There will be a performance at 8pm each evening, with an additional matinee show at 3pm on Saturday - be advised that any latecomers may be refused entry.

What is San Francisco Ballet: Mere Mortals about?

Billed as Pandora’s myth for the modern world, the show will follow the first mortal woman created by the gods.

Pandora is gifted a jar by Zeus who warns her to never open it, but curiosity gets the better of her. When she opens the jar, evils and miseries escape into the world - with only hope remaining trapped.

The characters will not be formally introduced, however audiences can expect to see these key figures emerge from the larger group of dancers: Hope, Prometheus, Pandora and Epimetheus.

Speaking to The Scotsman, principle dancer Wei Wang said: “Mere Mortals is so relevant because everyone is talking about AI right now, and worrying if it will take people’s jobs. We don’t know what the future will look like, whether politically or culturally, nor do we know what the relationship between humans and AI will be. With this piece, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone, but I’m not afraid to do that. It’s been eye-opening for sure, and I’m proud to be presenting it in Edinburgh. I want to hear what people have to say, to keep the conversation going, because that’s the whole point of us doing this.”
