Visiting Edinburgh for the vavious festivals in August can be an expensive business - show tickets, accomodation, food and drink soon add up.
But the truth is that there are many ways to have some festival fun withouy spending a penny.
Admittedly some of the shows that are billed as 'free', particularly at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, ask for a donation after the show - but if you don't like them you don't have to put your hand in your pocket.
And there are many other attractions and events that are genuinely free.
Here are 11 of our favourites.

9. Go celebrity spotting
Edinburgh in August is awash with celebrities - both those appearing in shows and those enjoying a visit. Probably the best place to go looking for famous faces is the Pleasance Courtyard - particularly during the Edinburgh Television Festival from August 19-22 when the likes of Tina Fey, Charlie Brooker and Graham Norton will be in town. | Shutterstock

10. Take a chance at The Monkey Barrel
The Monkey Barrel has become known as one of the best places to see stand-up comedy in Edinburgh - both during and outwith the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. During August you can book a ticket in advance to guarantee a seat or just turn up and see if there are any spares - on a 'pay what you want' model. Of course, many of the shows sell out well in advance (particularly at weekends), but it's always worth a shot. | Contributed

11. Take a breather at the museum
It may not be part of the festivals, but the National Museum of Scotland is right in the middle of the August madness and is a great place to escape the bustle...for free. With everything from dinosaurs and Dolly the Sheep, to the Lewis Chessmen, the Chambers Street museum is a favourite for those looking for a fun day out with their family. | Canva/Getty Images
